Arepo killings: Police begin trial of 20 suspects–Reports

New York[RR] Abuja–The Police on Wednesday opened its case against the 20 suspects standing trial before a Federal High Court in Lagos, over the May 24 Arepo oil pipeline vandalisation and killing of nine officers.

The trial began before Justice Okon Abang with the evidence-in-chief of the Sector Commander of the Arepo Police Department of Anti-Pipeline Vandalisation, ASP Usman Aliyu.

The 20 suspects had on August 7, 2014 been arraigned before the judge for their involvement in an illegal oil-bunkering deal which led to the death of no fewer than nine police officers.

The accuse persons were arraigned on a 14-count bordering on conspiracy, pipeline vandalism, oil theft and unlawful killings.

It would be recalled that some heavily armed, suspected vandals had on the night of the said day stormed the Arepo area in about 14 speed boats to carry out an illegal oil bunkering operation.

According to reports, during the illegal operation, the criminals were confronted by some policemen attached to the Inspector-General of Police, Anti-Pipeline Task Force, who engaged them in a gun duel.

It was gathered that during the shootout, one of the pipelines belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation in the area had exploded, resulting in an inferno that lasted for several days.

Report also had it that the gun battle resulted in the killing of nine policemen.

Among the killed policemen were one ASP Abdullahi Bature, Inspr. Raymond Oriere, Inspr. Usman Mohammed, Inspr. Oguntihemen Kolawole, Inspr. Tijani Jimoh, CPL Elogbamen Timothy, CPL Yakubu Aliyu, CPL Usman Abdukarim and CPL Dauda Mohammed.
