Delta LGA-Polls: “Everyday..frustrating and painful experience..convinces you that “Nigeria” is, indeed, a “big for nothing country,” “Delta State is on a lockdown”, “Folks who have no business with the election from other states are all trapped at the Niger Bridge. You can’t turn back. I have been here since 8am”–Ikechukwu Amaechi

New York[RR]Delta–LGA-Polls–Eyewitnesses say that Delta state is under lockdown, “you can’t move forward you can’t move backward they say.

According to Citizen Ikechukwu Amaechi put it this way:  “Everyday, you go through a very frustrating and painful experience that convinces you that Nigeria is, indeed, a “big for nothing country,” and that is putting it mildly.

He added, “As I write this, Delta State is on a lockdown. No movement! Why? Because the state is holding local government election. Nigerians who have no business with the election, who are going back to Edo, Lagos and other Nigerian states are all trapped at the Niger Bridge. You can’t turn back. I have been here since 8am, having left home early enough so as to get to Lagos early. Children are going back to school. Nobody cares. I am told we will be in this mess until 4pm. Yet, this is a local election that the ruling party in the state, PDP, is almost guaranteed to win 100%. Now, election is no rocket science. We have seen countries even in West Africa where elections are held and schools and businesses are not shut down. People take their children to school, go to the polling booths to cast their vote and go to work.

Posting on his facebook handle he added: “Yet, almost 19 years into our so-called democracy, an entire state is shut down because of LG poll. There are people who are trapped as I am right now who may be on medical emergencies but can’t reach the hospital. You need to be a die-hard optimist to believe that this country is on the right path. Nigeria, giant of Africa, indeed.” he fumed.

Citizen Amaechi added: “Now, there is a real medical emergency. A woman is running up and down in a state of hysteria, begging for onions. Said her child is having convulsion. Good Samaritans have obliged her and people are racing back to her car to save the child.

Emeka Nwosu: “What kind of country is Nigeria? Everybody taking laws into his hands. For Christ sake why should a State block a federal highway in the first instance, and without providing an alternative? The relevant federal security authorities should revoke the blockage immediately.

Citizen Kanayo Esinulo said: “So, IK, you were still hopeful that Nigeria can be redeemed. This political space called Nigeria is simply irredeemable. I have since written it off – a long time ago. A local govt election and you inflict so much pain and hurt on innocent citizens who are merely passing through your corridor. Shame!

Other reports say: “ANXIETY and apprehension marred the Delta State Local Government election, following the delay in the distribution of election materials.

At Ozoigwe primary school, Asaba, Oshimili South and Akwukwu-Igbo, Oshimili North, prospective voters were locked out as at 9:30 am. The situation was the same at Agbor, Ika South local government as materials were yet to be distributed to polling units.” Vanguard reports.
