The General Buhari Campaign in Borno

New York[RR]Borno–The indomitable General Muhammadu Buhari and his Vice Presidential Running Mate, the erudite Professor Yemi Osinbajo and other leaders of the indefatigable All Progressives Congress (APC) this morning defied the murderous antics of both the authentic and political Boko Haram to campaign in the Capital of Bornu State, Maiduguri.

Hundreds of thousands of inhabitants of Maiduguri thronged the venue of the rally to catch a glimpse of General Buhari and his entourage. It was a spectacular sight to behold.

The enthusiastic crowd of APC supporters were holding broom which they symbolically used to sweep the rally ground to the admiration of the leaders of the APC.

General Buhari and Professor Osinbajo and other leaders of the APC have shown patriotic, genuine and servant leadership by defying the security challenge and threat to his life posed by the rampaging Boko Haram to campaign in Bornu State; despite the assurances of Bornu Elders that even if Buhari fails to campaign there, the people would still massively vote for APC in next month general elections.

It would recall that General Buhari was former Military Governor of the defunct North Eastern State (now comprising of Adamawa; Bornu; Bauchi; Gombe and Taraba State) almost 40 years ago.

It is an incontrovertible fact that Bornu State is one of the strongest holds of General Buhari. Bornu State has always been a bastion of left wing politics.

In the first Republic, Bornu was the stronghold of the Bornu Youth Movement under Ibrahim Iman (1916-1980); a radical party that was alliance with the United Middle Belt Congress of Joseph Tarka that opposed the mainstream Northern Peoples Congress.

Ibrahim Iman won a seat to represent the Tiv province in the Northern Regional House of Assembly in 1961 despite the fact that he is a Kanuri. In those days of the yore ethnicity and religious politics was not the vogue.

In the second Republic the defunct Great Nigerian Peoples Party of Ibrahim Waziri held sway in the old Bornu State.

Since the beginning of the Fourth Republic, the Peoples Democratic Party has never won Bornu State.
General Buhari by campaigning in Bornu State despite the security challenges has shown the character of a strong leader that puts the interest of the people above his personal safety and comfort.

A genuine leader does not abandon his people in a period of adversity and turmoil.
